A chocolate hood for the summer
The Black-headed Gull is badly named. Its summer hood is dark chocolate brown rather than black, and in winter there is only a dark smudge behind the eye.
It is a small, quick, noisy gull, at home behind ploughs, along rivers and in town parks. In spring it breeds in crowded colonies on islands and in marshes.
