I like to think of these songbirds as heralds of spring. It is always a pleasure to hear them sing. From the very beginning of March, their song starts to return to the marshes, and before long you begin to spot them among the dry reeds. For me, hearing the first Bluethroat of the season is one of those small signs that spring is finally on its way.

My encounters
I usually start looking for Bluethroats in early spring, especially around reed beds and marshes. Often, the song comes first. Then begins the familiar search through the dry reeds, following the sound and waiting for that brief moment when the bird finally comes into view.
