Through my lens
Low on the cold water
The Common Merganser sits long and low on the water and slips under almost without a ripple. The drake is white with a dark green head; the female is grey, with a rusty head and a shaggy crest.
Its narrow bill has small serrations along the edges, which help it hold on to slippery fish. Most are seen in winter, on lakes and rivers that stay open.
