Eurasian Spoonbill
A graceful hunter of the shallows.
There is something unmistakable about a Eurasian Spoonbill foraging in shallow water. Moving slowly forward, sweeping its extraordinary bill from side to side, it appears almost effortless. I always enjoy watching this distinctive rhythm, especially when calm water and soft light transform an ordinary moment of feeding or preening into a photographic opportunity. That unusually long bill can make some of their movements look a little awkward, which makes it all the more fascinating to watch how skilfully they use it.

My encounters
There are several wetlands in the northern Netherlands where Eurasian Spoonbills can gather in impressive numbers, creating a remarkable sight. Polder Breebaart is one of the places where I enjoy seeing them, alongside De Onlanden, Ezumakeeg and Tusschenwater. Oostvaardersplassen is another popular location where I have encountered and photographed these distinctive birds.
