European Goldfinch

Red face, gold wings

The Goldfinch has a red face, a black-and-white head and a broad gold band across each black wing. Even in a quick glimpse it is hard to mistake.

It feeds on the seed heads of thistles and teasels, prising out seeds with its fine, pointed bill, and keeps up a liquid, tinkling twitter as it goes.
