Glossy Ibis

Zwarte ibis · Plegadis falcinellus
Through my lens

Dark from afar, bronze up close

From a distance the Glossy Ibis looks almost black. In good light its plumage turns out to be deep chestnut and bronze, with a green and purple gloss on the wings. With its long, downcurved bill it probes the mud for insects, worms and other small prey.

It flies in loose lines with neck outstretched, and in recent years it has turned up more and more often in the wetlands of Western Europe.
