Through my lens
A small hunter on the thorns
The male Red-backed Shrike sits on top of a thornbush in summer, a black mask across his eyes and a back the colour of rust. He watches, drops to the grass and comes back up with a beetle or a bumblebee.
What he doesn't eat straight away he spikes on a thorn, a small larder kept for leaner days.
