Our largest deer, loudest in autumn
A big Red Deer stag can top 150 kilograms, and every year he drops his antlers and grows a new set. No deer in the Netherlands is larger.
Most of the year the sexes keep apart: hinds with their calves in family groups, stags in loose bachelor herds. In September and October that falls apart. The rut starts, the stags roar through the night, round up hinds and push each other around antler to antler.
The rest of the time they graze quietly on grass, herbs and young shoots, mostly early and late in the day.
