The small deer of the woodland edge
Roe Deer are the smallest of our native deer and by far the most common. In summer the coat is reddish brown, in winter grey-brown. Look for the black nose, the white chin and the pale rump patch that shows when one bounds away.
Only bucks have antlers, short and upright, usually with three points on each side. They drop them in late autumn and grow the new ones over winter, in velvet.
Roe Deer browse more than they graze: buds, leaves, herbs, brambles. They like the edge between woodland and open fields, live alone or in small groups, and come out to feed mostly early in the morning and in the evening.
