Turning over what the tide left

The Ruddy Turnstone really does turn stones. It works along rocky shores and shingle with a short, wedge-shaped bill, flipping pebbles, shells and clumps of seaweed to see what is hiding underneath.

Its tortoiseshell back disappears against wet rock, and small groups often let you come surprisingly close before scuttling off along the waterline.
