Through my lens
Strong, wary and mostly out at night
Wild Boar are the wild ancestors of the domestic pig: heavy and muscular on short legs, with a long snout and a coat of coarse grey-brown to black bristles. Adult males, keilers in Dutch, have sharp tusks.
They live in family groups, sounders, led by an older sow. They eat almost anything, turning over the forest floor for roots, bulbs, insects and worms, and filling up on acorns and beechnuts in autumn.
The piglets are born in spring and are striped lengthwise, like little melons. In the Netherlands most Wild Boar live on the Veluwe, and they are active mainly at dusk and at night.
